S Sukhdev is one of the most celebrated filmmakers of documentary movies. He was born in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on 1 st October 1933. In 1955, Sukhdev started his career as an assistant cameraman for Paul Zil in India. His education did not get fully accomplished however, Sukhdev’s talent paved his way ahead. After excelling as a cameraman, Sukhdev started making short films on routine. Amongst his films, the most-loved ones are And Miles To Go…., India 67, and Nine Months To Freedom: The Story of Bangladesh. And Miles To Go is based on police repression, riches, and poverty which won an award in 1965 at International Film Festival. Sukhdev had used beautiful sound effects in the film Nine Months To Freedom.
His talent fetched him several awards; India 67 won National Award for Best Non-feature Film, and Best Documentary Award at Filmfare (1968), Behind The Breadline, got National Award for Best Film On Social Issues (1975), Filmfare Best Documentary Award for Nine Months To Freedom, and lots more. Despite receiving multiple awards, Sukhdev also had to face backlash from the censor board due to uncovering of truth. Nine Months To Freedom and India 67 had several objections from the censor and politicians.
However, Sukhdev didn’t step and back, and finally, the films were released to give India one of the finest filmmakers. S. Sukhdev died at the young age of 48, on 1 st March 1979, while mixing sounds at The Center For Education Technology, New Delhi.
