Nabendu Ghosh is a legendary Indian author whose main field of excellence was Bengali literature and screenwriting. Since Nabendu lived as a part of British-ruled India, Mr Nabendu lost his government job in 1944 for writing a piece named ‘Dak Diye Jaai’, which was released during the time of the ‘Quit India Movement’ launched by ‘The Indian National Congress against the oppressive rule of the British Raj in India. Due to this piece, he rose to fame, relocated to Calcutta in 1945, and became one of the most progressive and revolutionary writers in Bengali literature.
Nabendu Ghost passed away on 15th December 2007. Nabendu Ghosh joined Bimal Roy in 1951 because, after the partition, Urdu was declared the national language of East Pakistan (the old name of Bangladesh), which led to the banning of all Bengali literature and films. This political division is the reason which forced Nabendu Ghosh to join Bimal Roy, another legendary Indian director. He was wed to Kanaklata, who passed away in 1999. Nabendu greatly impacted India with his writings and work for freedom. In March 2008, his autobiography was published, named “Eka NaukarJatri.” In celebration of Nabendu’s birth century, an English translation of his sci-fi novel “Aami o Aami”, originally released in 1999, was translated into English and re-published on 25th March 2017. The name of the book in English is “Me and I.” As a writer, director and filmmaker, Nabendu Ghosh was best known for “Majhi Didi”, released in 1967, “The Sand Storm”, released in 1988, and “Raja Jani”, released in 1972.
He also won the Filmfare Awards in 1969 for “Majhi Didi.” His other shows for which he was the screenwriter or director include “Palatak” released in 2012, “Mera Karam Mera Dharam” released in 1987, “Krodhi” released in 1981, “Dil Kaa Heera” released in 1979, “ Ganga Ki Saugand ABP News had taken the initiative to protect our I >> Read More... ” released in 1978 and “Kaya Hiner Kahini” released in 1973 among many others. Nabendu Ghosh's extraordinary talent in screenplay writing in many of his films earned him the title of ‘Godfather of Screenplay Writing.
’ Nabendu Ghosh has won numerous awards and accolades throughout his entire life; he won the ‘Bankim Puraskar’ from the Bangla Academy, Govt. of West Bengal, ‘Haraprasad Ghosh Medal’ from Bangiya Sahitya Parishad, Bibhuti Bhushan Sahitya Arghya, Bimal Mitra Puraskar, Amrita Puraskar among the literary awards. He has also won various films awards like Honoris Causa conferred by the Film and Television Institute of India, which was awarded to him for his "Significant Contribution to Indian Cinema", the National Film Award in Best First Film of a Director – “Trishagni,” Film World Award for Best Screenplay (Do Anjaane) and BFJA Award for Best Screenplay: TeesriKasam (1967) to name a few.
