Karan Anshuman

Karan Anshuman is an Indian film director, writer, and producer. He is also the writer and director of Bangistan and the director, creator, and writer of the famous series Mirzapur. He is the co-founder of two digital startups: Dreamscape Media, a mobile and web development agency, and Upperstall.com, a film website that takes a serious and deep look at Indian cinema. Anshuman was raised in Mumbai, Maharastra, and after finishing his schooling at Jamnabai Narsee School, he went to St Xaviers' College to pursue arts and then to Denison University in the US to pursue an undergraduate degree in the filmmaking course.

Although he studied film as an undergraduate degree, technologically-inclined Anshuman co-founded Dreamscape Media in the year 2004 – a digital agency which in the business of creating mobile and web apps, and communication and online marketing. Anshuman made his directorial debut with the film Bangistan in 2015, which was released across 700 screens in India alone.

The Guardian called it a "suicide-bomber comedy" with "always something to laugh about" and that Anshuman "approaches his task with sensitivity and smarts." His next huge project was online platform Amazon Prime's first Indian web series Inside Edge. The show aired its first episode in 2017 with much fanfare and critical appreciation produced by the Excel Entertainment. The series became the most-watched web series on Amazon Prime at that time and won him the prestigious ITA Award for Best Director – Web Series along with Best Show.

The show has been nominated for the 2018 International Emmy Award in the Best Drama category. Firstpost's review mentioned, "Kudos to Karan Anshuman for making some of the best sequences I've seen on the small screen. Not only are they well-edited (each episode starts and ends with a bang), they are also superbly shot. Inside Edge has an IMDb rating of whopping 8.2. Teaming up with Amazon and excel again, Anshuman is the executive producer and showrunner for the hit series Mirzapur, a hinterland gangster drama set in the area of eastern Uttar Pradesh with the illegal drugs smuggling and arms trade. Mirzapur was released worldwide on November 16 in 2018. Anshuman made his literary debut with the book Kashmirnāmā, a fictionalized version of the Indo-Pak relationship and Kashmir conundrum, which was published by the Jaico Publishing House in 2017.
