Born on 21st March 1914 in Jharkhand, Hemen Gupta was a well-known film personality in the Indian film industry. His father, Mr. Purnanand Gupta, was a then government employee and was posted in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where Hemen Gupta spent the early days of his childhood. He completed his school and under graduation from Dhaka, Bangladesh. After completing his graduation, he moved to Kolkata, India, where he got involved in the freedom struggle against British Raj.
He was also arrested by British police on several occasions. In 1951, he wrote and produced his first film Biyallish. Soon he realized his interest in films and produced even more films. In his film career, he worked on several films as a writer and director and also made more than 10 movies. His work in the freedom struggle in India and film industry was appreciated by then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru Ji.
