Vijay Samuel Hazare was born on 11 March 1915 in Sangli, Maharashtra, India. He was an Indian cricketer. His father was a school teacher, and Hazare had seven siblings. He played his first test debut on 22 June 1946 against England. He led India to its first test match. Vijay represented India in 30 tests. Besides being a right-hand batsman, he was also a medium-pace bowler. He was the captain of the Indian cricket team in 14 test matches between 1951 and 1953. In his captaincy, India won its first-ever test cricket in 1951–52 against England at Madras.
Hazare scored 60 centuries and ten double centuries. Hazare also played for the Maharashtra, Central India, and Baroda teams. He was the first Indian batsman to score a triple century in first-class cricket. He was also the first Indian player to complete 1000 Test Runs. He played his last test match on 28 March 1953. Hazare retired from his cricket career at the age of 51. In his entire career, he made 18740 runs. Vijay Hazare Trophy is named after him. It is for the zonal-cricket tournament in India. He and Jasu Patel were the first cricketers to be honored with the Padma Shri. He died on 18 December 2004 following a prolonged illness caused by intestinal cancer.
