Mohammad Kaif is a former Indian cricketer born in a middle-class family on 1 December 1980 in Allahabad (Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh. He was a right-handed batsman, a right-arm off-break bowler, and an excellent cover fielder. His father's name is Mohammad Tarif, and he played for the Railways and Uttar Pradesh cricket teams. His brother is Mohammad Saif, who plays for Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh cricket teams. His mother's name is Kaisar Jahan. He married Pooja Yadav Kaif, a Noida-based journalist, on 25 March 2011. They have two kids - a son, Kabir and a daughter, Eva. He is a Bachelor of Arts from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj College. He started his career at the Green Park Hostel, Kanpur.
He debuted in ODI cricket on 28 January 2002 versus England. His last ODI match was on 29 November 2006 versus Africa. He made his Test match debut on 2 March 2000 versus South Africa. He won his first Man of the Match Award in the 2002 NatWest Series Final. He holds the record for the most catches (four catches) by a fielder in the 2003 World Cup match at Johannesburg on 10 March 2003. He has played for Indian, Uttar Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh cricket teams, Derbyshire County and Gloucestershire County Cricket Clubs. He has also played for Andhra, Chattisgarh, India Red, Leicestershire, Rajasthan Cricket Association President's XI, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.Â
His team won the Under-19 World Cup in 2000 in his captainship. He was the captain of the central zone and Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket. He was a part of the Indian team, one of the joint-winners of the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy shared with Sri Lanka. He was also a part of the runner-up team in the 2003 Cricket World Cup.Â
He retired from all cricket formats on 13 July 2018. He was a Lok Sabha election candidate from Phulpur, Uttar Pradesh, from the Indian National Congress Party in 2014. But he lost to the Bhartiya Janta Party candidate, Keshav Prasad Maurya. He has been named an assistant coach of Brad Hodge by Gujarat Lions in February 2017 for IPL 17. He was also the assistant coach for Delhi Capitals for IPL 2019 and 2020.
