Sushma Verma Devi is a renowned Indian cricketer who has played for her country on several prominent International platforms. Her skills as a wicketkeeper have been instrumental in propelling the Indian women’s cricket team to fame. Sushma comes from a remote village on the borders of Shimla. Her journey in the world of sports is one of deep-rooted talent and sheer dedication. Her athletic prowess not only extends to cricket, but she is also a proficient handball and volleyball player who has played both sports at the state level.
She was inspired by her grandfather, who had been a footballer, to pursue a life on the field even at the disapproval of the rest of the family. She was one of the initial members of the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association’s residential academy in Dharamsala. She led her team in the All-India under 19 women’s tournament, which went on to secure the runner up place in 2011. Sushma began her eventful professional career in the Women’s National Cricket team as a wicket-keeper and right-hand batswoman.
She was part of the 2017 Women’s World Cup, where India reached the finals, losing to England by a measly 9 runs. She is the first-ever cricketer from Himachal Pradesh to play for India at the international level. The chief minister of Himachal Pradesh honored her for the prestige she had brought to her home town by offering her the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police. Her contributions are forever recorded in the annals of cricketing history.
