Mallika Sarabhai is an activist, Indian classical dancer, and actress from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. She was born on May 9, 1954. Mallika Sarabhai is an experienced Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam dancer and entertainer specializing in using the arts for social development and revolution. She is the daughter of classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai and space scientist Vikram Sarabhai. Mallika has used movies and tv to promote social progress, particularly in women's empowerment and environmental awareness. She was in charge of producing three thousand hours of Television broadcast content through Darpana Communications, all of which were broadcast in Gujarati on Doordarshan. The content incorporates the most popular television genres. She has hosted several shows for STAR TV and Doordarshan, including the first NACO HIV series, Talk Positive; the science series Turning Point; Vaividhyotsav, the cultural quiz; and Srishti: The Environment Quiz. Mallika Sarabhai also authored the screenplay for the play 'Unsuni,' based on Harsh Mander's book 'Unheard Voices' to increase consciousness of the true difficulties plaguing India's marginalized pupils in prestigious schools and institutions. Mallika Sarabhai announced her candidacy for the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat as an independent candidate against the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate L K Advani on March 19, 2009. She was the first woman from Congress to win an election in 1984. She finally lost by a large margin to L K Advani, forfeiting her election deposit in the process.
