RM Rao is a professional cinematographer who has worked predominantly in films and advertisements. He was the part of the first batch of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) from 1961 to 1964. He influenced his batch mates and others to follow the path of filmmaking and cinematography. He has worked on various documentaries and advertisement films. He is called ‘Rao Saab’ by everyone. He helped to introduce the technologies like slow motion filming, split fields and video assisted camera technologies to advertisement films. He debuted in the film ‘Badnam Basti' (1971, dir- Prem Kapoor) is considered path breaking work in the Indian New wave cinema of the era which was the first movie to discuss about homosexuality. In 2019, his movie was reinvented by a museum in Berlin to give the new generation a glimpse of his work.
He has worked in Heerer Prajapati (Bengali 1968), Badnam Basti (1971), The Great Monkey Rip off (English 1974), Mrig Trishna (1975), Sarkari Mehman (1979), Love you Humesha (2001), Taj Mahal: An eternal love story (2005), etc. In documentaries like Kailash at Ellora (1965), Dubbawalas (1969), ‘Helen, Queen of Nautch Girls (1973), Autobiography of a Princess (1975), Touchdown (1982), Fearless: The Hunterwali Story (1994), Immortal Capital: The many cities of Delhi (1997), A Brilliant Sun (1999) etc. He is also known for some National Integration Movies like Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.
