Jal Mistry, a legendary and renowned Hindi cinematographer, worked primarily during the classic era of the 1950s and 1970s. He also appeared in several magnificent and iconic Indian movies. He was a professional superstar. Jal worked with nearly all the top directors of his era. The Mistry brothers established a name for themselves in Bollywood beside their elder brother, Fali Mistry (1917–1979). In the absence of principal cinematographer Josef Wirsching, Jal shot some scenes in Kamal Amrohi's classic “Pakeezah,” released in 1972.
Jal Mistry's acting career began in the 1940s with early talkies. “Barsaat,” starring Nargis and Raj Kapoor, was his debut film in 1949. Among his notable 1950s works are “Uran Khatola (1955), Aandhiyan (1952), and Heer (1956).” He worked as a cinematographer and producer in the film "Bombai Ka Babu (1960)" in the 1960s. “Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Aakhri Khat (1966), and Humsaya (1968)” are among his best works of the decade. He has worked in both black-and-white and color films. “Aakhri Khat,” nominated for an Academy Award in 1966, is still regarded as one of his best black-and-white movies. Jal showcased his excellent acting skills in several superhit films, including “Barsaat (1949), Aandhiyan (1952), Jan Pehchan (1950), Heer (1956), Aakhri Khat (1966), Baharon Ke Sapne (1967), Itihaas (1987), Hunsaya (1968), Man Mandir (1971), and Heer Ranjha (1970).” His other works include “Bidaai (1974), Bhanwar (1976), Main Tere Liye (1988), Chalta Purza (1977), Naseeb (1981), Kudrat (1981), Teri Kasam (1982), and Allah Rakha (1986).”
