Surya Mohan Kulshreshtha is a phenomenal actor, writer, and filmmaker, often referred to as an ‘A’ grade actor of Doordarshan, who has written and directed several theatre plays. He was born on May 8, 1953 in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He pursued a B.Sc. and also holds a law degree. He is the former director of Bhartendu Natya Academy in Lucknow, and he was a student of the foundation batch. He married Neelam Kulshreshtha, and both of them gave an excellent education to their children. As a result, his son Nitin is an Assistant Brand Manager at Sunfeast Biscuits, ITC. in Lucknow.

In 1974, Surya began to work at the Meghdoot Theatre and then started working as the president of the National Institute of Progressive Arts, Rangmandali. Before working in theatre, he worked at the ‘Hawa Mahal’ radio show, and then in 1972, he started working at a Life Insurance Corporation to earn extra income. The very first role he played in his theatre career was the role of a “deity” on the occasion of the Janmashtami, he later worked in numerous theatrical productions, including “Kolage,” “Mahanagar- Teen Samwad,” “Tambe Ke Keerey,” “Ek Aur Dronacharya,” and “Burning Path.” He directed more than 100 plays in different languages in many drama institutes. He started as a theatre director with the Greek play King Oedipus.

Surya wrote numerous articles that featured in many newspapers and periodicals, such as Rang Prasang and Chhayanat.

His contribution to the theatre industry is exceptional. Apart from acting and directing various plays, he conducted several workshops and delivered lectures across nations.  He became a member of the selection committee for admission at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. His play “Bhaqwadjjukeeyam” was honored for being the best production at the World Theatre Festival in Norway and also represented India in the same field in Germany. He got a National Award for the Hindi drama “Ye Vo Manzil to Nahin”.

Moreover, he appeared in a short film “The Bypass” which won the Staff Award at the Milan Film Festival. His Sanskrit film “Bhagavad Gita: Song of the Lord,” won the Golden Lotus Award and got the Sangeet Natak Academy Award from the honorable president. Surya is a real gem for the industry, and his contribution to the nation is unmatched.
