Raj Bisaria is an Indian director, actor and producer. He was born in Lakhimpur, Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, on 10 November 1935. Raj founded Theatre Art Workshop in 1966 and Bhartendu Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1975. He was called ‘the father of the modern theatre in North India’ by the Press Trust of India. He completed his education from Colvin Taluqdar’s College and Lucknow University. He joined the University Theatre group in 1962. He was awarded Padma Shree for his work in modern theatre and his contribution in growth of the same field. In 1969, Raj received invitation to train by British Council at British Drama League in the field of producer, drama instructor, and adjudicator. Subject of his plays are men-women relationship and social issues. He also encouraged a new genre called Nautanki to promote through his plays in Uttar Pradesh. In his career, he has directed and produced over 75 theatre productions. He also acted on Doordarshan from 1978. Bisaria also played a lead role in two dozen of his plays.
