Abidi was born in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, on June 11, 1965. Spina bifida was present at birth. At eight, Abidi underwent his first operation to address his spina bifida. He had nerve damage as a result. At age 10, he underwent another operation due to a fall-related injury. He relocated to the country with his family. Abidi received medical attention at the Boston Children's Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago after relocating to the United States. Aged fifteen, Abidi started using a wheelchair. He began working with Sonia Gandhi in 1993, founding and expanding the Disabilities Unit of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. A year later, Javed Abidi joined a little advocacy organization called the Disability Rights Group and began spreading knowledge about India's crippled population. A sizable pro-disability rights movement was born to persuade the Indian Parliament to enact a bill of rights for the disabled. On December 19, 1995, Javed Abidi led a demonstration in front of Parliament.
The People with Disabilities Act was enacted by Parliament on December 22, 1995, due to the protest. He wrote the Chief Justice of India a letter in 2004 about the accessibility of polling places for people with disabilities. In 1995, the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People was established by the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, with Abidi serving as its director. Abidi worked with corporate leaders from IBM, Apple Inc., Oracle Corporation, Cisco Systems, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard to hire disabled people in these businesses and the high-tech sector.

The NCPEDP and Abidi concentrated on career possibilities for disabled people, publishing disability topics and accessibility for disabled persons for the following two years. On March 4, 2018, Abidi passed away from a chest illness.
