Gunvantrai Popatbhai Acharya, also known as Gunvantrai Acharya, was a Gujarati novelist and journalist from India. His experience with seafarers greatly impacted his adventure and novel writings. His works include several historical fiction novels. Gunvantrai was born on 9 September 1900 in Jetalsar near Nawanagar (now Jamnagar, Gujarat). He completed his schooling at Mandvi, Kutch, where he was first introduced to seafarers. Gunvantrai joined college but dropped out after a brief period. He joined Saurashtramitra Daily in 1927. He was also associated with several news dailies like Phulchhab, Prajabandhu, and Gujarat Samachar. He was the director of ‘Mojmajah,’ a film weekly, and was awarded the Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak in 1945.
Gunvantrai wrote 169 books, including fictional novels, historical novels, short story collections, adventure novels, teen stories, and mystery novels. His stories about seafarers and their adventures were very popular and were received very well. His ‘Dariyalal’ (The Beloved Sea, 1934) is an adventure novel about seafarers of Gujarat and their settlement in East Africa based on oral history. His other stories include Bhagavo Nejo (1937), Sarfarosh (1953), Ratnakar Maharaj (1964), and Gurjarlaxmi (1952), among many more. Some of the plays written by him included Allabeli (1946), Jogmaya ane Sheelalekh (1949), Akhovan (1957), and Maar Raj (1957). Gunvantrai Acharya passed away on November 25, 1965, at 65, but he will always be remembered for the innumerable work he did throughout his career.
