Nimesh Desai was a renowned actor, director, and producer in the Gujarati Film Industry. He had spent almost four decades of his life working for the upliftment of the Gujarati film industry with his immense contribution of more than 104 profound plays. Although his contribution to entertainment is surreal, however, he had never dreamt of stepping into this industry. He got involved with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). At the age of 17, he was sent to monitor ISRO’s site projects in 1975 ISRO. He was sent to The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, to learn the art of filmmaking.

Later, he developed an interest in acting and started doing TV serials and did almost sixteen TV shows and a daily soap. After that, he worked as a director and made around 80 documentary films, for government departments as well as NGOs. He has also worked as a visiting faculty at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, Gujarat for filmmaking. Besides, he has directed 104 full-length plays, the recent one was ‘Nakho Nagar Narsaiyo.’

The movie was a major hit and won eight state awards. In 1992, Nimesh Desai was also honored with the State Excellence Award. Thereafter, he formed one of the largest theatre troupes in Gujarat inculcating more than 60 recitalists on board.

It was the last directorial work of a veteran director and it was widely appreciated by the national and international viewers. Desai was also loved for his contribution as a theatre ‘guru’. Under his guidance, a lot of actors found knowledge and passion for the craft. At the age of 62, he passed away on November 14, 2017, but his enormous legacy will forever stand tall reflecting his stature.
