Nanubhai Vakil was a film director, writer and producer who predominantly worked in the Gujarati and Hindi film industry. As a filmmaker, he was heralded for directing the first ever Gujarati talkie film ‘Narsinh Mehta’ which was a biopic of the infamous poet-saint by the same name.

 Nanubhai was born on 23 May 1902 in Valsad, Gujarat, which during the British period was known as Bulsar. He attended a law school in Bombay and graduated as a lawyer in 1926, after which he entered the film industry. In 1934, he co-founded Mahalakshmi Cinetone with the evergreen actress Zubeida, popular for her work in Alam Ara, India’s first talkie film. In his 1941 film Taj Mahal, he made a twelve year old child artist play the role of Mumtaz. He was the son of Bhimbhai Desai. He married Anuradha Vakil and had six children namely Rajesh, Rupa, Pradeep, Sunil, Navin and Jayshree Vakil. He died on 29 December, 1980 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
