Kumudini Lakhia

Kumudini Lakhia is a legendary Indian dancer and choreographer widely recognized for her immense contributions to Indian classical dance, particularly Kathak. She was born on 17th May 1930 in Gujarat, India. Her mother, Leela, who was a classical singer encouraged Kumudini to pursue her passion for dance, and she was sent to learn under the tutorship of Radheylal Misra, a disciple of Jai Lal. Her family's support for her passion for dance allowed her to complete her schooling in Lahore and her college education in Allahabad which provided her with an opportunity to study and immerse herself in the rich cultural heritage of India. Her exposure to different styles and gharanas of Kathak dance during her training helped her develop her unique style, characterized by a blend of traditional and contemporary elements.

After years of rigorous training, Kumudini established her dance academy, Kadamb, in Ahmedabad, in 1967. The academy has trained numerous dancers and has become an institution, contributing significantly to the development of Indian classical dance. Her style of Kathak is renowned for its unique blend of traditional and contemporary elements, characterized by intricate footwork, graceful hand movements, and a strong sense of rhythm. She has also experimented with other dance forms, such as Bharatanatyam and Manipuri, and has created a fusion of different styles. She has received numerous awards and accolades for her contributions to the field of dance. These include the prestigious Padma Shri, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Kalidas Samman.

She has also been acknowledged for her efforts to promote dance education and was awarded the Gujarat Gaurav Puraskar Award.
