Chandu Desai is a well-known cinematographer from Gujarati and Rajasthani film industries.  His real name is Chandrakant Narmadashankar Desai. His birthdate is 5 July 1945. His birthplace is Talaja village, Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. He was an expert in lighting and trick photography. Chandu did cinematography for various films from 1950 to 1990. In 1986, he became the independent cinematographer from the film Kesar Chandan, in which he won the Best Cinematographer Award from the Gujarat State Government. He also won the award for the film Maanvini Bhavai and Raj Ratan from the Gujarat State Government. His work was highly appreciated for the photography of drought and famine scenes in Gujarati film Maanvini Bhavai.

He worked in Gujarati films as a cinematographer like Panetar, Saajan Ne Sathware, Bhadarne Kanthe, Lakho Vanjare, Rasiyo Balam, Maadi Jaya Nu Mameru, Pratiggya, Oh Ho Ketlo Saaro Maaro Var, Panetar No Rang, Pratiggya and Vaagi Prem Katari. He worked in Rajasthani films as a cinematographer such as Derani Jethani, Bai Chali Sasariye, Ramkudee Jhamkudee, Beti Huyee Parayee Re, Bhomlee, Lichhmi Aayee Aangne, Beera Bego Aaije Re, Jio Mhara Lal, Dadosa Ri Laadli, Dev, Binanie and Baba Ramdev Baba Ramdev is an Indian Entrepreneur and spiritua >> Read More... (1994). He assisted cinematographers Arvind Dave and Mohan Singh Rathore in Rajasthani films. He and Mohan Singh Rathore have worked together in over 12 films. He has also done the cinematography for TV serials Adalat and Gandevta.

Gujarati film Pehli Preet No Pehlo Phagan (1994), directed by Subhash J Shah, was his last film as a cinematographer, but in 2013 he worked on the film Aulad. In the Hindi film Hum Pyar Tumhi Se Kar Baithe of Rajshri production, his lighting services were used. He acted in a small role in the Gujarati film Vat Vachan Ne Ver. He passed away on 13 June 2020 due to coronavirus in Bombay.
