Manchali is a TV series that aired on TV One channel. Manchali is an Urdu TV series. The plot unfolds with the story of a family suffering through different internal disputes and stressors. The main reason for this is the upcoming wedding of their daughter Aleena. The story begins with an introduction from the radio show to set the audience on a scene where Aleena works as a host on a radio show. Family dynamics are pretty complicated, as there are several generations all living together. Intergenerational tension does exist to a degree over household responsibilities and personal freedoms.
For example, Samia, Aleena's sister-in-law-to-be, was constantly being criticized by the elders in her home for sitting in her room and watching TV incessantly while doing very little work in the house. This friction comes primarily due to the upcoming marriage of Aleena to a man named Zohair. What gradually emerges is that Aleena does not particularly enjoy the prospect of this marriage, while her family does. Her father is eager to see the wedding take place. Further pressure on the situation is given by the fact that the family has received costly presents from Zohair's family regarding clothes and the promise of a new car. Aleena's father worries most about the wedding arrangements and their financial liabilities. He mentioned a doctor who has to be paid off next month. He said that he is a dangerous person and neither good to be friends nor enemies with, meaning some financial or other lawful problem the family is going through. There is also mention of Aleena's brother Azhar, who is torn between his wife Samia and her family. His wife, Samia tells Azhar that they have to seriously think of shifting to California where they have some prospects including a gas station. He meets resistance from Azhar, who feels he cannot leave as his father is in poor health and he has to support the family. Added to this atmosphere of tension at home is the head of the household being sick and not being well enough to come into the office. There is an expressional feeling that Azhar takes great responsibility for the family business in his father's absence. One late night, Aleena returns from a radio program, leading to a late-hour argument with her parents about staying out late and trying to avoid discussing the marriage. Her father confronts her about using the gifts Zohair's family has given her, but she still does not make a decisive decision about the marriage. Her father then advises her to pick up the phone, once and for all, call Zohair, and tell him that she does not want to marry him if those are her feelings. Aleena had then blown off her steam about how the only topic discussed at her house was her wedding that would happen in two months. She feels frustrated, cornered, and unable to express her inner self without the threat of being criticized by her family. There is also another subplot going on with Samia, who's very unlucky in her marriage with Azhar. She is pushing to get across to America, that is an escape from what she has been going through. This adds further tension to the household. Azhar feels torn between his wife's desires and family obligations. It also dwells on generational differences regarding marriage and personal freedom. While the older generation treated arranged marriages and family obligations as something normal and required, the young generation fought back against such traditions through the character of Aleena and to a limited extent Samia. All the characters are imperfect and human. They are trying to forge their way through desires and obligations against the holdings of family expectations and societal norms.
