Azhagiya Tamil Magal is a 44 episode long serial aired on Vasantham TV featuring the lives of five strong- willed independent women who also happened to be friends. Set in Singapore, the story narrates adeptly, the everyday struggles of the main characters; Sivanya, an ambitious and competent corporate woman played by Eswary Gunasegaran),Lata as the congenial school counselor played by Shamini Suppiah along with Malar Meni as the headstrong and encouraging Tamil teacher, Meru the caring and concerned mother of an ADHD afflicted child portrayed by Eswary Chandran and Athira a multi-talented creator cum writer brought to life by Indhu Ramkumar. As they juggle through their life , striking a perfect balance between work and house, they trudge through a diverse array of problems of varied hues stemming from this trapeze act of balancing.

What is to be appreciated is that a range of socially relevant issues faced mainly by women but not all, are handled deftly by the creators ranging from lack of support and understanding from family and partners, awkward silences due to patchy communications adding up to frosty relationships and stale families. Perhaps the one that deserves the most accolades is the sensitive and delicate detailing of ADHD and that the show does much to clear the misconceptions and falsities that often accompanies a diagnosis of any Mental illness and adamantly discredits the tendency of society to associate it with lunacy.

Equally heart-warming is the honest portrayal of the loneliness experienced by the elderly and the critical treatment of the stigma associated with the desire to have a partner so late in life. The plot is held together brilliantly by the performances with everyone one portraying their part beautifully with a nuanced restraint. The show brews up a perfect blend of heart-warming and heart- ending moments peppered with ego clashes and differing desires playing the spoilsport in marital relationships which are paced out evenly and marked with a high degree of realism. Though the story plays out in Singapore, narrated themes have universal merit and are amiable for a global viewership. As the tale progresses we get to see the trials and tribulations of family life, from a feminine perspective, which is unique and eye- opening and one that lends it a remarkable progressive shade, a rare feat in the crowded world of entertainment rendering it a must watch. Azhagiya Tamizh Magal airs on Vasantham TV from Monday to Thursday at 10 PM.
