Legend Of The Blue Sea is a South Korean television series. The show falls under the very popular genre of Fantasy and romance. Fantasy is a truly unique genre of storytelling in which the stories take place in an alternate reality where people have mystical powers. Fantasy is the most quoted genre of stories in pop culture. Legend of the blue sea follows the same template of fantastical storytelling. It has been inspired by a classic Joseon legend from Korea’s first collections of unofficial historical legends that are far from reality.

The series tells the love story between a con-artist and a mermaid. During the Joseon era, a mermaid saves the son of a nobleman whose name is Kim Dam-ryeong. After this, both of them become best friends. The boy names the mermaid Se-Hwa which means a bright and shining child. They both spend most of their time together and soon fall in love with each other. Dam- ryeong’s father suddenly arranges his marriage to another girl from a rich family. They both feel devastated and want to run away but since Se-Hwa can’t transform her fishtail into a pair of legs because she hasn’t reached adulthood. This leaves her disheartened and she decides to leave him forever. But Dam- ryeong isn’t ready to give up on his love so soon and thus on the night of his marriage, he leaves his house and sets out to find his one true love. He calls out to her but she doesn’t return so he jumps into the sea to find her. But since he doesn’t know to swim, he soon starts drowning and cries out for help. Soon Se-Hwa shows up and saves him but she knows that their love wouldn’t last and isn’t practical. So she erases his memory of their relationship.

They both go their separate ways but fate has other plans and they meet again in a strange situation. Will they ever end up together? Will Dam-ryeong get his memory back? The show answers these questions in a span of 20 episodes. The show explores various themes such as love, separation, rebirth, fate, and many more. The show is written by Park Ji-Eun and directed by Jin Hyuk along with some episodes being executed by Park Ji-Eun. The show released on the popular Korean channel, SBS TV. The show received great praise from both, critics as well as the audience. The young audience was particularly impressed with the show.
