This historical drama co-produced by BBC One and HBO and created by Sally Wainwright is set in the backdrop of the Industrial Revolution and takes place in West Yorkshire, England. It casts Suranne Jones as Anne Lister, an adamant woman struggling to save her ancestral home, Shibden Hall, by compromising with societal norms and expectations.
The series starts with Anne Lister traveling to the town of Halifax, West Yorkshire, to rehabilitate her uncle’s estate that she inherited. In the process, she also discovers that the family also owns a coal mine, which is in the wrongful possession of two brothers.
The series follows true incidents of the life and relationships of Anne Lister, a woman who heads into different business ventures, deals with the high society of England, and dares to live openly as a lesbian, all of which she writes in her diary which is encoded.
During her stay in Halifax, she gets involved in a then scandalous relationship with a woman- Ann Walker played by Sophie Rundle, who she then marries defying the societal pressures.
Anne Lister, as portrayed in the series, was a charming woman always dressed in black. Her interest in ‘masculine activities’ earned her the name Gentleman Jack.
