The characters of the first season are the citizens of Modesto, California. At night, someone invades Matt Skokie's house and kills him. The same person also severely injured his wife, Gwen. This incident leaves everyone in shock and propels the authority to take immediate action and launch an investigation. The police inform Matt's parents Barbara Hanlon and Russ, who are divorced from one another. The incident shocks both and they are unable to deal with the abrupt demise of their son. To add to their woes, both aren't on best of terms with one another. They also share cold vibes with Gwen's parents, Eve Carlin and Thomas Carlin, who too find the situation difficult to grasp. As the investigation proceeds, the police begin to suspect many people and discover dirty secrets and hidden facets of the victims.
The flawed legal system and constant politics in the upper rank don't help the case as well, and Russ and Barb must fight various odds to ensure that the investigation doesn't stray away, and the government punishes the real culprit. Who killed Matt? Is he a victim of a planned robbery or is someone behind his killing? The plot answers all the questions as it unravels. Season One consisted of eleven episodes. It premiered on the small screen on March 5, 2015. Felicity Huffman, Penelope Ann Miller, Timothy Hutton, and W. Earl Brown play the roles of Barbara, Russ, Thomas, and Eve respectively. Richard Cabral, Caitlin Gerard, and Benito Martinez also play pivotal roles. The series received both critic's as well as audience's love. It also won several Emmy Awards. Its success prompted the makers to come back for another two seasons.
