Mahabharata is a Bengali cartoon that aired on the renowned channel Sony Aath. The show is based on the epic of Mahabharata and brings on-screen the complex characters, battles, and politics through animation. The cartoon series is quite educational and informative as it imparts knowledge about the epic, but in a fun way and with the help of its animated characters. The Mahabharata is one of the most famous ancient Indian epic which revolves around the fight between two families: the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Now the cartoon series is also set in the same place and time. Other than the war over the ‘Throne’ the show also portrays their central conflict unfolds in the smaller stories and philosophical teachings, just like the epic.

The epic was composed by Krishna-Dwaipayan Vyasa, a character in the narrative. The major themes of the cartoon are morality, blood, politics, love, etc. The story begins with King Shantanu of Hastinapur, who marries Ganga and has a son named Devavrat, later known as Vishma Pitamaha. Now, from here onwards Vishma narrates the epic and shares his wisdom and experiences throughout. The main storyline revolves around a struggle for power within the Kuru clan, with two families involved: the senior Kauravas and the younger Pandavas. Despite being the eldest, Duryodhana of the Kauravas is younger than Yudhishthira of the Pandavas.

The main fuss is that both claim the right to inherit the throne, leading to a series of conflicts. Ultimately, the Pandavas become victorious because of their hard-work and intelligence. The conclusion is pretty tragic as in the end, lord Krishna dies which leads to the end of his dynasty, marking the beginning of the Kali Yuga in Hindu tradition. Overall, the animated cartoon series is an educational series about our Hindu tradition.
