Star Performances
No matter what people say, the one thing that makes this film worth watching is the absolute realism shown by the makers. From real athletes to real techniques, almost nothing is scripted.
Analysis
Indian cinema is not devoid of sports dramas. What it is devoid of is realism and the dedication to show authenticity in the name of sports dramas. You get either something as dramatic as ‘Chak De India’, or something as underwhelming as ‘ Azhar Click to look into! >> Read More... ’. Nothing in between.
However, JSB Sathish had something different in mind when he turned out with ‘Singappenney’. This has no connection with a popular song from the Vijay starrer ‘Bigil’, but is a sports drama revolving around a talented swimmer. In a way, this film may remind some of the Telugu sports drama ‘ Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju Click to look into! >> Read More... ’, which centered around a dedicated athlete, who wished to make it big despite the hardships of his life.
However, there is a difference between the two. ‘Singappenney’ has no second angle unlike the former, and is also more focused on depicting the events as realistically as possible. For an Indian sports drama, this is rare. What makes this depiction more interesting is that there are no regular tropes of a classic sports drama in this film. The athletes are real, the techniques are real, and the struggle is equally real.
True, this film was released on the occasion of Women’s Day. However, instead of milking the occasion, the film shows the girl power the way it should be. The acting performances are also extremely brilliant.
Are there any flaws in this movie? Yes, there are. The film is not as gripping or emotional as it should be. The focus on realism is so much, that for a few moments, you forget, that this is a feature film and not a sports documentary. There is a simple, but noticeable difference between the two, and the makers failed to acknowledge it.

Verdict
‘Singappenney’ is a flawed, but realistic take on Indian sports. From the word go, the focus is on showing the never-say-die spirit of Indian athletes, come what may. If only the screenplay was emotionally engaging as well.
