Plot
Meena is a village girl who is in love with a guy from a socially backward class. But, Meena’s family thinks that she is possessed by some spirits, and takes her to the family deity and then to the exorcist to make the spirit leave Meena. Meena’s family wants her to get married to Pandi, but Meena doesn’t even look at Pandi. What happens next? Whom did she marry? The rest of the story deals with this.
Star Performance
Anna Ben is given an impressive role to play with no significant expressions. She has a few dialogues and a song to hum. Most of the time she shows her expressionless face, which is the biggest plus point in the film. Soori is good in a different role. His expressions and body language, when he gets irritated by Anna’s Meena role, make us realize that Soori is capable of doing any roles.
Analysis
The director should be appreciated for choosing a simple plot. We wonder how he convinced Anna Ben to do this role in her debut. The village backdrop is good, and all the actors are from the rural locality, and they fit perfectly in the role. Right from the rooster, to the kid who feeds the rooster, each character has its uniqueness. The auto travel, dialogues, and the family’s irritation, hesitation, and motive are well-scripted and shot. Usually, the stars express well to highlight their character, but for a change, Anna Ben’s character is shown as expressionless in most of the times to highlight the role. The director succeeds in grabbing the attention of the entire theater crowd. The background music has nothing but the auto-rickshaw sound and people’s voices. Though the climax portions are shot well, we can’t assure that it will attract all audiences.

Verdict
The film didn’t have any messy plot. For the good performances and decent execution, Kottukaali is watchable once!
