Plot:

Sethu and Megha decide to elope. However, they are not alone. Sethu is forced to bring his quarrelsome uncles along since his sister Sumi has eloped as well. Now Sethu must find Sumi, keep his uncle calm, and at the same time make sure that his escape with Megha is not revealed. Can he make it?

Star Performances:

Given the fun and light-hearted entertainment one witness, none would believe that this is only the first project of Achyuth Vinayak. If the makers intended to deliver a light-hearted, wacky comedy, Achyuth has hit it out of the park.

‘Thrishanku’ is only the 2nd attempt of Anna Ben at a romantic comedy. However, she has nailed it in her rendition as Megha, and the chemistry between Anna and Arjun as Sethu and Megha is quite cute.

However, the stars of the moment have to be Nandu and Suresh Krishna, who play the quarrelsome uncles of Sethu. The way they bicker with each other while thinking of ways to bring Sethu’s sister back is a treat in itself.

Analysis:

Thrishanku originates from a Sanskrit legend about a king, who wishes to ascend to heaven in his mortal form but is left suspended mid-air. This later developed into the word Trishanku, meaning stuck in the middle of nowhere.

The same word echoes throughout this movie as its central theme, with a simple journey developing into a comedy of errors none predicted. As a debutante, Achyuth Vinayak has done a great job. The screenplay is crisp, the performances are good, and you can’t help but laugh at the sheer absurdity of the situation.

If you’re a fan of the wacky comedies that Priyadarshan was an expert in, this one is for you. The camera work in some scenes only makes you smile at the wry humor. Interestingly, there is some social commentary as well, given the situation Sethu and Megha are in. However, the best part is that it is subtle and natural.

However, the movie is not without its share of flaws. While there is nothing that makes this movie a disaster, the editing does have room for improvement. There was little focus on the emotions between the two lovers. Worse, Sumi [Sethu’s sister] didn’t have much to her character’s credit. The equation between Zarin and Shiva’s characters could have been much better.

What’s There?

  • Light-hearted entertainment that keeps you engaged throughout
  • Earnest efforts from the lead pair of Anna Ben and Arjun Ashokan
  • Good social commentary without being too preachy
  • Outstanding performances from Nandu and Suresh Krishna

What’s Not There?

  • Lack of consistency
  • Lack of sound character development
  • Unnecessary sequences that almost derail the smooth flow

Verdict:

‘Thrishanku’ is one of the rare cases of a cliché trope turned interesting. Despite the absurdity of the plot, the movie manages to entertain its audience. It is not perfect, but it is an experience that you won’t easily forget. Join this quirky ride now!
