The relationship between a guru and his student is handled beautifully in Kaliyachan. This film is adapted from the renowned poet P Kunjiraman’s poem.

Plot: The film revolves around the life of Kunhiraman, a Kathakali artist. The Kathakali artist, played with perfection by Manoj K Vijayan, is filled with a confused mindset. He is devoid of any goal, and happens to meet a Guru of Kathakali. The Guru finds him capable and trains him into a great Kathakali dancer. But it is ego of Kunhiraman which acts as enemy in the relationship between the Guru and Shishya. The film garnered much appreciation in 2012 but owing to technical issues was not released then. This is a production endeavor of the NFDC.

Kaliyachan is certainly an offbeat film, nevertheless a commercial filmgoer would accept it to a certain extent. The film is of drama genre and the characters are spontaneous. But there are also some actors who find it difficult to cope. The plot is in predictable lines. Farook Abdul Rahiman Farook Abdul Rahiman, born on November 5, 1966, in >> Read More... has helmed the direction of the movie and the flick is quite a biography. Manoj K Vijayan lifts the film with his exemplary performance. The character of Kunhiraman has various shades and Manoj K Vijayan does that in a laudable manner. Kalamandalam Siva Namboodiri (the Guru) could have done a better job. Tirtha and Vaigha’s performances are average. Abdul Rahiman doesn’t do all those things as seen in an offbeat film and plays safely. He manages to express what he wanted to tell, through this film.

Kaliyachan fetched Manoj K Vijayan the Second Best Actor Award at the state level. It also fetched Farook the Best Debutant Director at the state level. The film garnered Bijibai the Best Music Director Award at both the national and state levels. The songs are full of melody and they soothe your soul in every possible way. Bijibai has really done a commendable job with the songs. M J Radhakrishan, has brought alive the mudras nicely. The film, which has been finally released by NFDC, would surely be a solace for Manoj K Vijayan, who felt that this film is indeed one of his greatest films.

Verdict: A worthy wait.
