Plot

Amar opens ‘Ladies Bar’, a liquor bar exclusively for women. However, a social worker Sudhakar has objections to the operations to the same. Who will prevail in the end?

Star Performances

TM Somaraj does his best, both as a producer, and one of the actors in this film.

Apart from TM Somaraj, it is the technical department of the film, that does a fine job of making this film somehow watchable.

Analysis

Women empowerment is one of the most sought-after topics in the region of both literature and cinema. However, very few have the courage to depict the same through the respective mediums. Is ‘Ladies Bar’ any different?

Directed by Muthu AN, this film aims to address the hypocritical approach of the society through the medium of a ‘Ladies Bar’. The film starts on a good note and initially promises an entertaining film, with a deep social message.

However, midway, the film’s narrative loses focus. From a film with the social message, it suddenly changes its focus to the exploitation of women. Some of the sequences have no connection at all with the original plot. It seems that the people entrusted with the editing made a complete mess of the same. The musical score is no better, and at the best, forgettable. The film is almost 2 hours and 15 minutes long. Yet, after the second half, it seems like a never-ending lecture on moral science.

Is there anything good about this film? Despite the underwhelming efforts by director Muthu AN, TM Somaraju, who is the producer [as well as one of the actors] of this film, makes a decent effort as the progressive husband. The ensemble cast of ladies is just about okay, with nothing very remarkable about their performance. Probably the actor who did the role of Sudhakar was more interested in his role than the ladies themselves!

Verdict

‘Ladies Bar’ is that social drama that has the potential to achieve the impossible. However, director Muthu AN had other ideas. A seemingly good script on paper was ruined by execution. Only the performances of TM Somaraju, and some visuals somehow managed to salvage the film.
