Plot
The narrative opens in a small village where two friends, Guthli and Laddu, want to study and write, but both belong to a small caste; hence, the school does not give them admission. Guthli and Laddu come out of the house every day and stand near the school’s window to learn what is taught in the class, and they are satisfied to learn something new every day. Both their fathers work to clean drains in homes and government offices. Laddu is somewhat happy with his life but Guthli has a great desire to go to school, sit on par with other children, study, and suceed. However the villagers have backward thoughts and they do not allow admission to a lower caste. Whatever Guthli learns at school, he asks his father about, his father being uneducated, is not able to answer his complex questions. But seeing Guthli’s desire for education, he also wants to educate his son. The school principal of that village, Harishankar, is a sincere person, but he also follows the caste system in the village. One day Guthli’s father, Mangru, is beaten outside the tea shop because he accidentally touches the tea cups of a higher caste. But when all the sweepers go to the office of a senior officer, he explains to Mangru that if you become educated and successful in life then no one will see you as low caste. From there he decides that he will somehow get his son admitted to the town school. Will he be successful? The rest of the movie revolves around it.Â
Star Performance
Along with a beautiful message, the acting was damn good, presented beautifully with emotions, especially by Dhanay and Heet, who were realistic in their acts despite their young age. Story writing and direction are average and could have been better.
Analysis
The movie rightly depicts the present social glitches and the struggle of the lower caste working as a sweeper and doing cleaning work as a livelihood. But as a movie, it is prolonged, for the entire length of the movie we keep hearing about cleaning sewers and toilets. Also, the movie had a more extensive scope; rather than solving the problem of just one kid, they could have given a more significant solution to make the film more interesting. Altogether, the film captures critical, complex narratives that reflect societal problems, and some of the most essential global struggles of our time.Â
What’s There?
• The movie makes you aware of the unfair treatments that still prevails in the rural areas.
What’s Not There?
• The story is unwantedly stretched.
• The ending is not satisfactory.Â
Verdict
It is a must-watch movie with an incredible message for the present generation teaching them the value of education, which they get from their family background.Â
