Plot
Fourteen year old Lucas is inducted in a gang but is keen on not including his ten year old brother and keeping him safe. A war veteran with PTSD has come to the boy's rescue.
Star performance
Jean-Claude Van Damme utilizes his natural screen presence to the action set pieces; he is not convincing in the emotional scenes, but does well in the action set pieces even their choreography of them is also underwhelming. Elijah Rodrigues delivers a good performance and so does David Castaneda despite his character being underwritten. The rest of the actors are also decent at best.
Analysis
The film wants to be more than just an action film, it wants the audience to be emotionally invested but fails to pull off that. Honestly Jean-Claude is a known action star but here his action set pieces are lacklustre, even for an action fan its dull. The acting performances are decent at best. They try despite the underwritten nature of the story and the characters but fail to keep the ship afloat. Some plotlines are just questionable, for example, a young girlfriend of the veteran who has no stake in the matter other than looking like a doll. Even PTSD is shown in such a stereotypical way that there is no room for mystery. The most significant selling point of this film is Jean-Claude, but he is honestly underwhelming. His acting is mostly reacting weirdly, not the way it's supposed to be and him being an action star is not at all utilized well in this film, you’d be annoyed with the camera movements especially a lot of shaky shots. The story had the potential if it was directed differently. We Die Young is a below-average action film that only the fans of Jean-Claude Van Damme will question because the general public wouldn’t care.
