' The Signal Click to look into! >> Read More... ' is the low key science fiction movie which will not only always keep you in suspense but will also make you second guess your predictions with every passing scene.
This movie starts with a road-trip of three college students, Jonah, Haley and Nic to the college Haley is moving to. When they start getting creepy text messages and calls from the unfavourable NOMAD, the spooky science geek of their class with whom they have a former dispute, they decide to track down the location from where these messages are being sent. Things go south when they try to take a detour and try to find out this science geek, and after a flash of white light and some confusion, Nic finds himself somewhere completely different. He wakes up to find that he is being interrogated by a man called Dr. Wallace Damon in a sterile facility because he is suspected to have had an encounter with an extra-terrestrial being. In disbelief, when he tries to break out of the facility with his friends, he finds he is a part of something much bigger than he could have ever known.
One would automatically start trying to look for answers with Nic as he struggles to come to terms to what has actually happened. However, the desperation and curiosity is left unquenched as the movie refuses to answer any of the main questions in the beginning. The acting of Laurence Fishburne Known for his manly portrayal of characters and on >> Read More... and Lin Shaye The Scream Queen of America, Linda Shaye, also cal >> Read More... has carefully managed to keep the suspense alive in the most eeriest ways as they remain ever ambiguous and shielded. As the movie progresses, the viewers would come up with more questions about what is hiding behind the pristine white corridors and what are the men walking around in the HAZMAT suits up to. And in this same way things slowly build up to a very unexpected ending.
This is not one of the action-packed sci-fi movie that has been the trend in recent times. This is more about the suspense and the thrill of what is about to happen next and how to nullify the expectations of the viewers. Even though the very scientific terms and the hush-hush feel of the movie can at times come off a little too secretive, the way the story builds up and unfolds are commendable.
To this low-key science fiction movie that is more about the brains than the brawn, I give The Signal, 3 out of 5 popcorn tubs.
