Plot

The film’s protagonist is Alicia West, played by Naomie Harris, a U.S. Army veteran who joined the New Orleans Police department. Alicia was partnered with Kevin Jennings, played by Reid Scott. Their patrol area included the deprived neighborhood Alicia grew up in. There, she also met her childhood friend Milo Jackson, played by Tyrese Gibson. One day, when she takes up Jennings shift so that he could go home early, she ended up patrolling with Deacon Brown, played by James Moses Black. During their shift, Deacon heads into a dilapidated building after getting a call and asked Alicia to wait in the patrol car. When she heard gunshots, Alicia put on her bulletproof jacket and headed into the building where she saw Deacon and two other policemen shoot three unarmed drug dealers. When they saw that Alicia’s bulletproof jacket’s camera had recorded everything, they try to get rid of her. Alicia takes help of her friend Milo to survive. The film follows Alicia and Milo as they try to save their lives and upload the camera footage in the police server.

Star Performance

Naomie Harris and Tyrese Gibson deliver stellar performances. Naomie Harris is great in action scenes and perfectly portrays her character’s emotional struggle.

Analysis

The film’s title “Black And Blue” is about the protagonists identity; she’s black, but also a policewoman i.e. blue. The film shows her in isolation because of her two conflicting identities. She is neither welcomed by her co-workers nor by her community.

What’s There?

• Stellar performances by Naomie Harris, Tyrese Gibson, and Frank Grillo

• A suspenseful and thrilling story following a black policewoman as she tries to save herself from fellow police officers and local gangsters

• The film has action, drama, and thrill

What’s Not There?

• The film feels boring at times as the plot tries to incorporate too many elements

Verdict

The film would be a good watch for action and crime genre enthusiasts. The film has a good story, performances and cinematography.
