CAST & CREW
The Legend of Barney Thomson Click to look into! >> Read More... is the debut film of the ‘The World Is Not Enough’ actor, Robert Carlyle whose name is known to invariably create a sense of curiosity among viewers. This movie is a dark comedy noir about a barber Barney Thomson (played by Robert Carlyle) and a serial killer. The ‘dark humour’ is weaved into the interactions that take place between the suspected barber and the overzealous cop Detective Inspector Holdall (played by Ray Winstone The full name of Ray Winstone is Raymond Andrew Ra >> Read More... ).
Plot
Robert Carlyle is a thin-haired socially withdrawn barber from the Bridgeton area of Glasgow who becomes the suspect in a series of gruesome murders. Unfortunately, someone has been abducting young men from the city, murdering them and posting a body part to a relative from various Scottish tourist spots. Apparently, the Detective Inspector of the City of Glasgow, Inspector Honda has pegged Barney to be the murderer. He’s almost correct except that Barney is not the murderer of these young men. This is the moment where the dark comedy starts to play to see whose incompetence wears out first. Usually, in such times of distress, a child looks for support from his mother. But in this case, Carolina, Barney’s mother (played by Emma Thompson Thompson is an actress, writer, and a comedian in >> Read More... ), is just the opposite. This monstrous and devious mother thinks nothing of dismembering the corpse and just stashes the dead body of the salons’ owner (whom her son killed accidentally by a pair of scissors) into her fridge. Just as his life goes downhill, Barney stumbles across the real killer. Will he help the inspector catch the real killer? Or will he flee altogether? Watch the film to find out.
Analysis
Drawn from the off-the-ordinary comic novels of Douglas Lindsay, “Barney is like the modern day Sweeny Todd.” The finale seems to have been directed in the style of ‘ Django Unchained Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ director Quentin Tarantino There are people who follow the created path and g >> Read More... which doesn’t go with the downbeat comedy of the rest of the film. However, the Glasgow locations selected by him and his cinematographer Fabian Wagner are too pretty to go unnoticed. Carlyle’s movie portrays some very dark intentions upfront with stomach-wrenching close-ups that may send fragile viewers packing even before the opening credits are complete. So if you like gruesome, bloody crime movies that thrill you, this movie is sure to deliver.
Star Performances
Emma Thomson, hands down, stole the attention in all the scenes she appeared in! Her performance was unnerving, and her accent spot-on right down to the pronunciation of breakfast as ‘brake-fist’ and a strong, razor-sharp nastiness as some critics have said. Ray Winstone too, did a marvellous role as a ‘cockney cop.’
What’s there?
1. The background locations in Glasgow shot are stunning and visually pleasing!
2. The wide lens used by cinematographer Fabian Wagner gives that musty, roached set-up providing the viewers with an ultimate experience of being in that scene.
What’s Not There?
1. The movie seems ‘fussily composed’ with a suffocating plot.
2. Sometimes the angles in which a scene is shot may seem difficult to comprehend with clumsy and dusty filters.
3. There’s so much going on that it edges on utter chaos.
Verdict
If you want to watch a film which is brutal, gruesome and gives you goose-bumps but at the same time provides some unexpected, hilarious twists, The Legend of Barney Thomson is the best choice you’ll make.
