Plot 

The film’s protagonist is Starr Carter, played by Amandla Stenberg, an African American student who lives in a primarily black neighborhood and goes to a prominent prep school. While Starr was returning from a party with her childhood friend Khalil, played by Algee Smith, they are pulled over by a policeman who asks Khalil to exit the vehicle and put his hands against his head while the policeman checks his papers. When Khalil was trying to grab his hairbrush from the car, the policeman shoots him. Starr is named as the witness in the case, but the knowledge is not made public. Khalil’s case sparks an outrage among the general public. The film follows Starr as she is haunted by the events of that day, her mental struggles in keeping her life in her neighborhood and school separate, and her thirst for justice for Khalil.

Star Performance 

The entire cast performs well. Amandla Stenberg gives a powerful performance as Starr Carter. She perfectly portrays her struggles, her fears, and the fire that burns inside her to bring about some change and get justice for her friend.

Analysis 

“The Hate U Give” is a powerful piece of cinema depicting the racial dynamics in America. It perfectly describes the dichotomy in their lives through the differences in the life of people in Starr’s neighborhood and her friends from her private prep school. It also describes how the youth are raising their voice and taking a stand against racial discrimination and police brutality.
