Rosewater is a drama film by Jon Stewart Jon Stewart is an American famous Television Host, >> Read More... , based on the memoir by Maziar Bahari and Aimee Molloy Then They Came for Me which recounts Bahari's 2009 imprisonment and then, torture by Iran, based on an interview he participated in on The Daily Show that same year.
Plot: Bahari arrived at Iran in an intention to conduct an interview with the much anticipated Mir-Hossein Mousavi in June 2009, who is the man who can shake President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s reign. Bahari took his own life risk, and sent the footages of the street riots, during the elections, to his channel. Police arrested Bahari, and then, was tortured for 118 days and interrogated blindfolded by a man who had a unique distinguishing feature, which he smelled of rosewater. While his pregnant wife trying her best by raising awareness over this issue for saving her husband, and the media also playing in, does Bahari get a bail and is freed from jail?? Or, is he beaten to death in pain? Watch out the movie to find out.
Star Performances: Bernal and Kim Bodnia are generally, some of the most underrated actors. This movie proves that once again. Exceptional acting by the duo maintains the tension throughout the movie. Also, excellent support by Golshifteh Farahani and Shohreh Aghdashloo adds more value to the movie, especially, when Bahari's wife starts a campaign to free her husband. It's quite a treat to watch that scene.
Positives: This film is the one that is dedicated completely to those foreign journalists, who risk their own lives for covering hot topics. This is quite a solid piece of work that must be seen. Being the debut film of Jon Stewart, he has proved that “Yes, I can do it!! you will see more of mine in the near future”. He keeps his satire at places, even though sometimes, the story telling goes out of hand.
Negatives: The film mainly received positive reviews although certain aspects could have been made better. To account to that, it lacked pace at certain parts, or to say, urgency in some places. Also, the end result was not nail-biting, and at places, the storytelling doesn't stand out.
Verdict: It's quite a moving film, which carries the subtext that, any mass outbreak, can be as disturbing as any torture, thus making it, a must watch film. Although you may not watch it because of your busy schedule, try to watch it at least for the foreign journalists.
