Plot 

The film follows Jefferson Kyle Kidd, played by Tom Hanks. Jefferson Kidd was a captain in the confederate army but now made a living by travelling town to town in Texas and reading newspapers’ stories for the locals for ten cents. While travelling, Jefferson Kidd comes across a wagon, he inspects it and finds out that the driver has died and that the wagon was transporting a young girl, played by Helena Zengel, who calls herself cicada and speaks the language of the Kiowa tribe. From the papers Kidd finds in the wagon, he ascertains that the girl’s name is Johanna Leonberger and she was kidnapped by the Kiowa and had been raised by them for the past six years. The wagon was transporting her to her aunt and uncle who lived 400 miles away. The film follows Jefferson Kidds and Johanna as they travel together, bond and find solace in each other’s presence.      

Star Performance

Helena Zengel and Tom Hanks give stellar performances. Tom Hanks perfectly portrays his characters subtle characteristics and emotions. Zengel performs exceptionally well as a child actor.  

Analysis 

The film has a good story and cast. The film gets boring and predictable every once in a while. The plot moves slowly, but the cinematography, set and costume design are good.

• The film is a heartwarming, touching story about how two individuals who are all alone in this world find family in each other

What’s Not There?

• The film is predictable at times

• The middle part of the film is boring when the characters have a series of encounters with strange individuals along their way  

Verdict

The film features one of Tom Hanks’ best performances. The film would be a good watch for drama enthusiasts and for Tom Hanks’ fans.
