Plot
The film’s protagonists are Lady, voiced by Tessa Thompson, an American Cocker Spaniel, and Tramp, voiced by Justin Theroux, a Schnauzer-mix dog. Lady lives in a happy home with her owners Jim Dear, played by Thomas Mann, and his wife Darling, played by Kiersey Clemons. Lady is friends with her neighbor’s dogs Trusty and Jacqueline. Tramp lives on the streets, stealing food to feed himself and is constantly chased around by the local dog-catcher Elliot, played by Adrian Martinez. On Darling’s baby shower, Lady is shooed away by Darling’s aunt, and Lady is perplexed why she was treated this way and her owners were neglecting her. Lady talks about this to Tramp, believing him to be Trusty. Tramp told Lady that her owners would soon have a child of their own and forget about her. These words resonated with Lady after the baby was born. One day, when her owners were not home, Darling’s aunt, believing that Darling caused trouble around the house took Lady to get her a muzzle. Lady ran away and met Tramp. The film follows Lady and Tramp on their journey together to find comfort and happiness.
Star Performance
The voice actors perform really well and successfully capture the dogs’ charms and emotions. Thomas Mann and Kiersey Clemons gave mediocre performances with stiff acting and no chemistry between them.
Analysis
Although the film has a great voice cast and good animations, it does not introduce enough changes or modifications to warrant the remake. The 1955 version and this version follow the same story with very few changes.
What’s There?
• The voice cast performs well and the film has good animations and transitions
• The film shows the racial acceptance in New Orleans of 1950s by showing Lady’s owners as an inter-racial couple
What’s Not There?
• The film does not introduce many changes to the original. Newer generations might like this film because of better animation and technology but adults would prefer the old version because it would evoke childhood nostalgia for them
Verdict
“Lady And The Tramp” would be a good film to watch with children for the viewers next family night. The film would be a good watch for family-friendly comedy film enthusiasts.
