Plot
The film’s protagonists are Stella Grant, played by Haley Lu Richardson, and Will Newman, played by Cole Sprouse. The two teenagers suffer from Cystic Fibrosis, a disease that damages internal organs and makes the patients susceptible to infections. Because of the nature of their illness, patients with cystic fibrosis should not come within six feet of each other. While Stella does her treatments regularly, Will is rebellious because of a grim prognosis and an infection that rendered him ineligible for a lung transplant. Stella tries to help Will do his treatments regularly and adequately, and they become friends. But soon, Will tries to distance them because he realizes that he has fallen in love with Stella and doesn’t want to endanger her by staying close to her. Stella is determined to be with Will, take back one foot from cystic fibrosis, and maintain a five feet distance forever. The film follows Will and Stella’s love in a situation where their love and proximity are harmful to them.
Star Performance
Haley Lu Richardson delivers an impressive performance as Stella. She perfectly portrays Stella’s anxiety, worries, pain, and hopefulness. Cole Sprouse also gives a good performance as Will and perfectly portrays the characters’ rebellion, fear, pain, love, and sacrifice.
Analysis
The film is sensitive, detailed, and logical in portraying a deadly disease. The cinematography and the direction are good.
