Plot

It narrates the story of two astronomers attempting to warn humanity about an impending comet that would kill humankind. Astronomers Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) found it. They subsequently took their discoveries to the White House and the media, asking for urgent action to rescue humanity. But things don't happen as they thought since the President (Meryl Streep) acts according to her self-interest, and the media is more concerned with celebrity gossip than the impending danger to humanity. The movie is a parody of the government, politics, celebrity, and media’s indifference to the environmental calamity.

Star Performance

The film Don’t Look Up has several A list actors of all time. They are often seen to be in the same scene in the movie. Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Tyler Perry, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi), Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, and Meryl Streep are actors in the film. The ensemble cast's performances bring the characters to life, from Rylance's IT genius to Streep's blazing hot, opportunistic, egotistical President. Jason (Jonah Hill) is funny as the President's son and Chief of Staff, and Blanchett is great as the shallow and hard-nosed Brie.

As the plaid-shirt-wearing, pill-popping, worried Mindy, DiCaprio successfully conceals his golden good looks under an unfashionable haircut, beard, and round spectacles, while Kate Lawrence is with even odd hair. Yule, played by Timothée Chalamet, becomes Kate's admirer after seeing all her breakdown memes. Yule and Kate begin dating once she returns to Michigan. Himesh Patel plays Kate's manipulative lover Phillip, who wants to take advantage of her.

Analysis

The story of Adam McKay and David Sirota is extraordinary, but it will be tough for specific viewers to comprehend. The script by Adam McKay is innovative and the dark comedy is maintained throughout. The film is a critic to social media, politics, negligent administration and several other issues. At times, the picture becomes incredibly sad and unsettling, and the shift in tone occurs organically.

What’s There?

There is an ensemble of great actors

What’s Not there?

It got monotonous and lengthy at points.

Verdict

The film provided a much-needed recap of 2021. The one thing that bothered me at the end was the short-lived character arcs, despite a brilliant ensemble that did not fail in performance or message. It is a must-see film because of McKay's sharp humor, brilliant performances, and subtle genius.
