Plot 

The film follows Eli, played by Myles Truitt, a 14-year-old kid living with his adoptive father, Harold, played by Dennis Quaid. One day, while Eli searched for copper wires and anything else he could sell, he stumbled into an abandoned building. Inside the building, he saw futuristic armor clad bodies lying on the floor. Eli picked up a weapon, which activated itself when he touched it. This startled him, and thus, he dropped the gun and ran back home. At home, he was greeted by Jimmy, played by Jack Reynor, Hal’s son, who just got out of prison. At night, he can’t resist the allure of the weapon and goes to get it. When he returns, he overhears Jimmy’s conversation with Hal about his debt. He had borrowed $60,000 from Taylor, played by James Franco, who threatened to hurt Hal and Eli if Jimmy didn’t return the amount. Soon after, Taylor and his goons tried to rob Hal’s business to recover the debt. There is a scuffle between them, and Jimmy kills Taylor’s brother. He takes Eli with him and runs away; Eli and Jimmy bond during their road trip. At a strip club, they befriend a stripper named Milly, played by Zoë Kravitz. During a fight between Jimmy and the strip club’s owner, Eli fires the strange gun to protect Jimmy. Eli, Jimmy, and Milly escape the club, but they are followed by Taylor, the police, and otherworldly soldiers who are after the gun. The film follows the three of them as they try to escape from their clutches and uncover the mystery of the strange weapon.

Star Performance 

Myles Truitt is amazing as Eli and infuses his charm into the character. James Franco gives a spectacular performance as an unhinged maniac hell-bent on revenge. The rest of the cast also performs well. 

Analysis 

The film was based on the directors’ short film “Bag Man.” The concept of the film is great and although the film aimed to infuse drama, family, action, and science fiction, the film fails to execute it.

Verdict

“Kin” tries to incorporate science fiction, drama, action, and family but fails at grabbing the viewers’ attention. Some actors perform very well, but some characters feel underdeveloped. Overall, “Kin” might be a good watch for action and science fiction enthusiasts.
