Mads Mikkelsen is an eminent Danish actor. He was born as Mads Dittmann Mikkelsen on November 22, 1965 at Østerbro, Copenhagen in Denmark to Bente Christiansen and Henning Mikkelsen. Mads grew up in Nørrebro. During his childhood, he was trained to become a gymnast and he aims to pursue athletics. However, he studied in Gotherburg where he become articulate in speaking Swedish language. He became a professional dancer for almost ten years until he quits and decided to study at the Århus Theatre School to start a career in acting.

 

He was debuted as a film actor through the Danish crime film, Pusher in 1996, where he played as the sidekick of Frank (played by Kim Bodnia). The film made a success internationally and later, two sequels were produced. He continued to play small roles and most often, he did comic roles in popular Danish films. But later, he bagged the lead role of Lenny in the crime drama film, Bleeder in 1999. In 2000, he essayed the role of Arne, a gangster in the black comedy film, Flickering Lights. A year later, the actor gained more fame after portraying a gay role opposite with Troels Lyby in the black comedy film, Shake It All About. In 2002, he was starred he did his award winning performance as a doctor who fell in love with one of his patient’s girlfriend in the film, Open Hearts. His performance gained Mads Robert and Bodil nominations for Best Actor in year 2003. He also received the Best Actor award at the Rouen Nordic Film Festival. In 2003, he was featured in the short picture film, Nu as a husband who leaves his family. Later, he bagged the role of Svend, assistant of a butcher where they serve human meat in The Green Butchers. Mads received the Best Actor award at the Fantasporto Award. Subsequently, he was cast as Magnus in the Spanish/Danish film, Torremolinos 73. In 2004, he did a recurring role in Pusher II, a sequel of his the 1996 film, Sequel from which he received acclaim and accolades such as Best Actor Award at the Bodil Award, Zulu Award and Robert Festival Award. In 2005, the brilliant actor played the role of Ivan Fjesldsted in the black comedy film, Adam’s Apples. Mads’ breakthrough was from the television crime series, Rejseholdet where he played as Allan Fischer, a detective inspector from which he gained the Best Actor Award at the TvFestival.dk. This is his longest running character which runs for 32 episodes. He became a renowned actor internationally after donning the role of Tristan in the2004 film, King Arthur. This film received negative reviews but commercially successful.

 

In 2006, he was starred as Christoffer in the award-winning film, Prag opposite with Stine Stengade. He gained the Best Actor at the Zulu Award and nomination at the Robert Festival. In the same year, his portrayal of Le Chiffre’s character in the popular film, Casino Royale was extensively acclaimed. Later, he was cast in the lead role as Jacob Petersen in the drama film, After the Wedding from which he also earned many nominations in different festivals. In 2008, he played as Jørgen Haagen Schmith, a resistance fighter in the drama-action film, Flame & Citron. The film is nearly based on the real-life events about the two most active fighters in World War II. He also voiced Le Chiffre’s character in the video game, 007: Quantum of Solace. The following year, he bagged the lead role as Igor Stravinsky in the critically acclaimed French film, Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky. A story about the relationship of a fashion designer and a composer. He returned to doing aggressive roles in the adventure drama film, Valhalla Rising in 2009. He acted as Draco in the 2010’s fantasy-adventure film, Clash of the Titans.

 

In 2011, the actor played the villainous character of Captain Rochefort in the 3D film, The Three Musketeers. This film received negative reviews from the critics. He was starred as Lucas in the drama film, The Hunt in 2012, from which he gained the Best Actor Awards at the Bodil Awards, Robert Award and Cannes Film Festival. In the same year, he was featured in the historical highest budget drama film, A Royal Affair and essayed the role of Johann Friedrich Struensee, a physician who had an affair with Caroline Mathilda of Great Britain (played by Alicia Vikander) while healing his mentally ill husband, Christian VII (played by Mikkel Følsgaard). In the same year, Mads received the American Society’s Person of the Year. He was also starred in the thriller-horror television series, Hannibal. He donned the role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter on NBC. He also appeared as Nigel in the American-Romanian adventure film, Charlie Countryman in 2013. Recently, Mads has done the film, The Salvation which is set to release this year. He is also set to voiced one of the characters in Kung Fu Panda 3 in 2015 and will star in the remake of the 1972 film, Cut – Throats Nine together with Jordi Mollá and Harvey Keitel.

 

The non-religious actor got married to Hanne Jacobsen in year 2000. They have been dating since 1987. The couple has two children namely, Viola and Carl.
