Plot

The film’s protagonist is Alex Strangelove, played by Daniel Doheny. Alex is a high school student who started a relationship with his longtime friend Claire, played by Madeleine Weinstein. Alex is embarrassed about being the only virgin in his friend group and so, Alex and Claire plan to book a room and have intercourse. At a party, Alex met Elliot, played by Antonio Marziale, an openly gay boy. During their interactions, Alex sensed that Elliot had a crush on him, but ignored that and continued their friendship. Spending time with Elliot made him question his sexual orientation. The film follows Alex as he struggles with determining his sexual orientation, and navigates his relationship with Claire and Elliot.

Star Performance

Daniel Doheny delivers a good performance as Alex, and perfectly portrays Alex’s awkwardness, naiveté, and sexual struggles. Daniel Zolghadri and Madeleine Weinstein also give good performances.

Analysis

“Alex Strangelove” is a good coming of age movie set in the backdrop of a progressive high school of 2018 where talks and doubts about sex and sexuality are common. The film is good because it discusses homosexuality as a common event and even incorporates some light-hearted humor instead of viewing it as a tragic happening.

What’s There?

• The film has romance, drama, and comedy

• The film is a light-hearted entertaining story of Alex’s journey to determine his sexuality

What’s Not There?

• The film is full of clichéd concepts common to teen movies

• The film is not paced well and some parts are dragged out

Verdict

“Alex Strangelove” is a light-hearted portrayal of a very relevant and serious topic. Although the film is simple and light-hearted, it does not skimp out on its portrayal of the inner turmoil and struggles of a person who is confused about their sexual orientation. So, the film would be a good watch for romance, comedy, and LGBTQ film enthusiasts.
