While everything can’t be hunky dory all day, the Telugu industry is almost on the same trajectory as Tamil cinema was last year. Except for a few movies, most of the big banner movies are biting dust at the box office. Even Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom couldn’t recover its own budget. In fact, the dubbed version of Mahavtar Narsimha in Telugu is earning more than some of the latest releases in Telugu!
There might be multiple reasons for the same, but some believe it to be a cocktail of high ticket prices and the priority to early OTT releases, instead of a proper theatrical experience that audience wants. A good example of the same could be Dil Raju’s production Game Changer, which was the Telugu debut of S Shankar. Despite leaving no stone unturned, the film turned out to be a washout at the box office, despite the presence of Ram Charan, SJ Suryah etc.
If not for Sankranthiki Vasthunnam, which released around the same time, Dil Raju would have been in serious trouble. Interestingly, small budget movies like Court, Mad Square have fought an uphill battle to keep Tollywood alive.
