The government had acquired the land from the farmers and the public forcedly for the Chennai – Salem Eight Lane Highway project. Today, the Madras High Court pronounced its verdict to stop the acquisition of the land. The judges said that the government hadn’t planned properly before launching the project and they hadn’t got the environment appraisal properly. The government hadn’t considered the livelihood of the farmers and the socio-economic problems too.
The court also said that the government had acquired the fertile farmlands and hence passed a stay order to acquire lands. Interestingly, the case was filed by
