Madhur Bhandarkar is well known for his  unorthodox dramas. Having made his debut with a relatively unknown Trishakti in 1999, Madhur shot to fame with the crime drama Chandni Bar in 2002. Despite negligible promotions, the movie turned out to be a sleeper hit, and earned Tabu her second National Award for Best Actress.
