The President of India,
Ram Nath Kovind honored the former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee with the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna. Pranab served as the President from 2012 to 2017. The 83-year-old political leader had been in Congress for more than five decades. His political breakthrough came in 1969 when he was elected as an MP.
After Indira Gandhi’s death, he didn’t get proper recognition in the party and hence, Pranab launched his party Rashtriya Samajwadi Congress. Later, he dissolved it and joined Congress. In 1991, after Rajiv Gandhi’s death, he got appointed as the Planning Commission leader.
He had been the External Affairs Minister in 1995. He had also served as the Commerce Minister, thrice. Pranab was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
