Uzra Butt was born on the 22nd of May. 1917 in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh as the daughter of Mumtazullah Khan and Natiqua Begum. She completed her education at Lady Irwin College, Delhi University. She got married to Hameed Butt and had three children. Uzra was a well-known actress and a theatrical personality. In 1937, she joined Uday Shankar Ballet Company as an actor cum dancer and then went on to join Prithvi Theatre. In 1944, she joined the Indian People's Theatre Association as an actress. She played several lead roles in various plays including Khwaja Ahmed Abbas's Zubeda.

She also played the female lead in films like Sakuntala (1944), Ghaddar (1948) and Kisan. In the 1960s, she formed a dance troupe and also acted in television several times while serving the Pakistan National Council Of Arts. In 1985, Uzra joined Ajoka Theatre and acted in several plays like Barri, Dukhini, Dukh Darya, Takey Da Tamasha, Talismati Tata, Teesri Dastak, Kali Ghata, Adhuri and Surak Gulaban Da Mousam. In 1993, she performed Aik Thi Nani alongside Zohra Sehgal. Uzra was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1994 and India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama. On 31st of May, 2010, at the age of 93, Uzra Butt died in Lahore, Pakistan.
