Prafulla Kar was an Odia musician, singer, songwriter, writer, and columnist who lived from 16 February to 17 April 2022. He gained notoriety for his Odissi Music presentation as well. In 2015, the Indian government granted him the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian honour, for his artistic contributions. He was born in Puri, Odisha Province, in 1939 into a family of musicians. Susila Kar is his mother, and Baidyanath Kar is his father. Khetra Mohar Kar, his uncle, was a table musician. Having lost his father at a young age, he was nurtured by his grandmother Apanna Devi and grandfather Bhagaban Misra. He graduated from Sangeeta Bisharada in Law.

He was a prominent member of I.P.T.A.A., the C.P. I’s cultural arm, and a member of A.I.S.F., the students’ wing of the organization. In addition to serving as the music director for four Bangla films, Prafulla Kar has frequently sung and directed music for 70 Odia films, both released and unreleased. Prafulla Kar Samman, a two-day musical celebration honouring his birthday each year, is given to a different vocalist. The prize includes a shawl, a citation, and a monetary pay out of Rs. 1 lakh.
