Vasant Shankar Kanetkar was an Indian playwright and novelist from Maharashtra. He was born on 20th March 1922 in Satara District, Maharashtra, in the town of Rahimatpur.His father was Shankar Keshav Kanetkar, a poet writing poetry under the pen name Kavi Girish and a founding member of a circle of poets named Ravikiran Mandal. Khandekar pursued his education in Pune and Sangli and passed his M.A. exam in 1948 in Sangli. After graduating, he started a job as a lecturer in Nashik in 1950, where he received wide admiration from the audience for his play 'Raigadala Jevha Jag Yete.’

Khandekar kept the Marathi commercial theatre vibrant for more than two decades, and five of his plays received the best play award of the Yearfrom the Maharashtra State Government. Some of Khandekar’s plays include “Devanche Manorajya,” “Mala kadhi Sangaychay,” “Beiman,” “Vedyache Ghar Unhat,” and “Raigadala Jewha Jag Yete.” He wrote four novels named “Ghar,” “Pankha,” “Porka,” and “Tethe Chal Raani.” Kanetkar received a Filmfare Award in 1970 for Best Story for the Hindi movie “Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool,” an adaptation of the Marathi play “Ashrunchi Jhali Phule.” In 1988 he presided over the “Marathi Sahitya Sammelan.” In 1992, he received a Padma Shri award for his contribution to literature. He passed away on 31st January 2000.
